The 18,000m2 site sits prominently on the Corniche Road nearby the Sheraton Hotel at the mouth of the West Bay District of Doha. An ideal location and opportunity to develop a public venue project that showcases Qatar’s commitment to sustainability.
KEO was commissioned by the Public Works Authority to study the site and to provide creative design concept that would meet the objective of creating a national landmark destination that would also deal with challenge of re-using built foundation piles of an abandoned structure. An underground 5-level basement car park incorporates existing excavations and piles, and each level has an approximate area of 16,000 sq. m and capacity for 600 car park spaces.
The underground parking is needed to address the shortage of parking in the West Bay area.
The vision of the development, targeted as an public/private/partnership opportunity, is to have a monumental structure above a carpark serving as entry that would also be heavily articulated with retail, food and beverage outlets and children’s entertainment venues.
The sculptured center piece structure is set off by heavily landscaped surroundings that would include waterscapes, themed areas, and public art areas. Together creating a destination park for visitors to stroll, picnic and spend quality time.
The project had design goal to achieve an overall GSAS 3 stars rating.
