Major Roads Upgrades and Improvements

Al Khawaneej Road Upgrade Link to Sharjah

Dubai, UAE

Al Khawaneej Roads Improvement Project opened in 2021 cutting travel time to reach Sharjah from 25 minutes to 9 minutes, reducing road congestion and doubling junction capacity from 8,000 to 16,000 cars.

Al Khawaneej Road along with Al Amardhi Road connects to a major highway, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) and to another major highway, the Emirates Road (E611).

Overall, the project included the implementation of a tunnel on Al Khawaneej Street at its intersection with Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, with a length of 680m, a capacity of three lanes in each direction, and a surface intersection controlled by light signals to ensure free and safe traffic movement on Al Khawaneej Street, and the development of the roundabout at the intersection of Al Khawaneej Street.

“The Improvement of Al Khawaneej Roads Project is one of the key strategic projects for improving the links between Dubai and Sharjah through the improvement of vertical roads linking with the Emirates Road and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road up to the Airport Street,” Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, RTA.

KEO utilized its engineering and construction knowledge to ensure the traffic could still travel through the area throughout the construction. This was achieved by KEO utilizing its local knowledge and relationships with the authorities and the community.

The project scope included the full design and construction management and supervision of the entire upgrade requirements.
